GAME OF THE MONTH OCTOBER 2005
[[[AMOK]]]

BACKGROUND INFO.

Based on the game BERZERK which was manufactured by a company called STERN in 1980.  John Dondzilla has brought this forgotten little gem back to life !!!

AMOK! features 12 mazes with increasing skill levels each time you complete the 12 .In each and every maze, the humanoid must destroy all robots using his laser gun and without touching the deadly walls, colliding with a robot or getting hit by any of the lasers fired by the robots, easy you would think; ( Its not ). If you destroy all the robots you receive an added bonus, plus a bonus life for 1,000 points.

After the humanoid has destroyed all the robots, he must escape through one of open doorways before Smileybot appears. The humanoid must escaped before Smileybot gets him or he is done for because Smileybot cannot be killed.

Loads of action and best of all one of the only Videopac game to feature multiple lives !

This can be purchased from John Dondzilla at the very good price of $20.00 USD

VIDEOPAC.ORG EXCLUSIVE INTERVIEW WITH AMOK'S AUTHOR
JOHN DONDZILLA

What inspired you to write an odyssey game all those years
after the system was pretty much obsolete ?

I was always a big fan of the Odyssey 2 and thought
that since so many of the original games weren't that
great, the system could use a decent title. I wanted
to try something different as well, I've written many
Vectrex games and needed a change of scenery. I wanted
to do a 2600 game, but there were already many homebrew
titles out there already.

How long did Amok take you to write ?

I
think about 2 months part time.

What was the trickiest part of the programming ?

Everything. What works on the emulators many times
will not work on the real machine. The constant page
switching is the worst, you can only work in one 256
byte page of memory at a time.

How many Amok cartridges for the Odyssey/Videopacs would you
estimate are floating around at the moment  ?

Not many. Probably only 40-50. I guess the O2 doesn't
have the same cult following as the 2600 or the Vectrex.

A
nd what percentage would you say have made it to the European/Videopac market ?

Probably half of them made it overseas.

Do you have any plans or Ideas for other Odyssey games ?

Ideas yes, plans no. I just don't have the time to code
anymore.

Is there anything in Amok that you would have like to have
added but were bound by the machine restrictions ?

Animated robots. With only 4 sprites on screen at a time
I was limited to the stock O2 "stick man" figures. Speech
for the
VOICE! would have been nice too, but after experimenting,
I didn't like the way it sounded so I left it out.

Compared to other consoles how did you find programming the Odyssey ?

Easier than an Atari 2600 but more difficult than the rest. The
CPU is very slow and it's difficult to keep everything running
together.

Did you design your own cover and label art ?

Yes.

Did you own an Odyssey console back in its heyday ?

I bought one in the early 80's when they started going on
clearance shelves, I never owned any of the original game
systems when they first came out.

What is your all-time favourite computer game ?

Trolls and Tribulations for the Commodore 64.
