6. TEN PIN BOWLING, BASKETBALL

COLLECTING
Another one of the Ralph Baer sports ranges, reasonably easy to collect a few variations to this game, Jopac released an enhanced version of this game that was never released by Philips under the + label.

Many variations exist of this game as you can see below, however we are yet to confirm the existence of a SIERA variation, again it is more than likely out there. but no one seems to have it, and I am yet to find any scans or pictures. Released 1978 By Magnavox 1980 By Philips

PLAYING
Tenpin Bowling and basketball, where did they pluck that combination from, one of the few sports Videopacs I've played, albeit briefly, both games stood out in their average~ness.

In this cartridge you get a tolerable game and a nice two player game.  In bowling, you must press the action button at the right time to send a horizontal moving ball down the alley.  Then as it is travelling, you can flip the joystick right of left so send the ball on a curve.  That's it.  Simply, eh?  There are two main problems:  one is a problem and the other is a glitch I think.  The first problem is I cannot get a strike to save my life.  Maybe that's just me.  The second problem is that even though the ball goes over one of the dots, it does not disappear!  I've had a chance to pick up many a spare, but because of this problem, I didn't.

Up to 4 rotating players can join the fun in either Regular mode or Tournament mode, which just makes the ball move faster.  Not the ultimate party game, but if you have some nostalgic friends, then break this puppy out and relive those bowling moments.

Basketball is the better game on this cartridge.  It's 2D, but very addicting.  You must find a human 2nd player to play this game.  Basically, a ball gets drop down from the middle of the screen after every shot and you must race to get it and shoot it into a jutting hole on either side of the screen.  When you shoot the ball, it is shot at a random height and angle, but it will go in about 85% of the time.  You have a chance to block it by being in front of your opponent when he shoots the ball.  Sounds way to simplistic, right?  Going either left or right and just shooting doesn't sound like much depth, but when you actually start playing this game, you see that it's one of those game you have to come back to.  I only wish you could play the computer on this one.

Here's a cart where they programmed a round sprite, and decided to milk as much functionality out of it as possible. the bowling is tough, but remotely enjoyable- a ball slides across the screen, and you fire the button to release it, and you can then put a little curve on it. basketball is a joke- two guys fighting over this bowling ball, and you slide them back and forth across the bottom of the screen, and shoot them into these square receptacles. enjoyable for schlock value.(1-2 player bowling, 2 player basketabll)
