GAME OF THE MONTH July 2005
FROGGER

BACKGROUND INFO.
In 1983 the magazines started to list The G7000 in the compatibility lists with certain Parker released titles, by the time they were released in the UK I had unfortunately moved on from my Philips, onto the Commodore VIC20, which came with a frogger clone as one of the freebie tapes. The Vic version was not as close to the arcade original a the
Videopac release, but unfortunately I never got to see this version until I started my collection again three years ago. Frogger was licenced by Parker from Sega for the home market, as back then Sega seemingly had no interest in the home console market (my how that was to change).

Along with Frogger they also released Super Cobra, Q-Bert & Popeye arcade conversions, however some magazines also ticked G7000 compatibility with Tutankham, Spiderman and as I recall another title in the parker range, existence of Tutankham was proven much later see (http://www.dieterkoenig.at/ccc/) as was Spiderman, The other Parker game remains a mystery to me at the moment.

Finally Videopac owners were able to obtain 3rd party licensed games, which would have meant competition between companies for our money instead of the monopoly Philips had on our coins, which ultimately would lead to higher quality games, unfortunately the four released Parker titles were the end of the road, Tutankham never saw a release although it would appear got fully developed.

PLAYING THE GAME.
If you've never seen Frogger on any format, I don't know where you have been hiding, its one of the classic game formats of all time, Simply put the basics of Frogger is on a par for original game play as space invaders, Pac man & Defender. The original concept was taken from Lunar Lander, a process of making your way to the safety of a home base at the top of the screen, unlike Lunar Lander,  you had several home bases and the screen was split into two distinct sections, the road where you avoid the oncoming traffic and the river, where you hop onto the river traffic, however the river apart from falling into to water you may be faced with other obstacles such as disappearing turtles that give you a ride for a short time before dipping you to your death. again similar to Lunar Lander you are charged with rescue missions, but instead of the stranded astronauts, you can pick up baby frogs and carry them to safety for bonus points.

Once you have filled all the safe bases at the top of the screen you progress to increasingly difficult, faster and more treacherous levels.
